Finding YOUR Interior Design Style

Finding your interior design style is like finding your fashion style. You must see what works best for your space and what makes it feel like home. For fashion, you find pieces that look good on your body and build your wardrobe that can grow with you for years. For interior design, you want to make sure you love every aspect of your home—the layout, the decorations, and the functionality.

There are some things to remember when trying to find the right style. What does your space look like? Is it a two-story house, or is it a studio-style apartment? You want to make sure that you are being mindful of your surroundings. Does your home have floor-to-ceiling windows and a beautiful backyard? Or are you facing another building, 30 floors up? The best way to design your space is to make different mood boards for each room. Do they have a common theme you didn’t know you kept returning to? Is there an essential piece of furniture that you want to make the focus point of the room? There are many different styles to go off from, or you can put your twist on it! Planning can be stressful, but knowing what you want can make it a lot easier when sourcing pieces.
To start, keeping your bed and bedding simple and clean is a must when planning the bedroom. You want the bed to be the first thing you see when entering the room. The bedside tables or the nightstands are where you can have more freedom. Do you want a nightstand with drawers or one with open shelves? Do you usually keep random items on top, and it’s not a mess? Nightstands are also very important when you live in a studio apartment with an open floor plan. You don’t want to clutter up a table that people will see. So maybe opt for one with drawers to keep the mess out of sight.
Another way to find a specific style you want is to have a piece of artwork as your inspiration. For one of my projects, I was given a painting they wanted to use as inspiration and included in either the bedroom or the living room. I found this very helpful because I pulled specific colors from the painting and incorporated them throughout the house. Another idea is to go through different eras influencing the place’s style or architecture. This is important because you don’t want to cross over too many eras and try to make them all work together. If you like a modern house but still have a cozy feel, add some elements of a farmhouse style.
You can also find inspiration from a place you traveled to. Have you always loved going to the beach and being by the water? Then, you might lean towards a coastal vibe or look into the different shades of blue for an accent color.
Your home should be your safe place, a place where you feel calm and can enjoy yourself at the end of the day. It’s important to make it reflect you and a place you feel comfortable in.
It took time and many late-night scrolls on Pinterest to find my favorite interior design style. Even though I still love many different styles, the one that feels the most like home and isn't too overwhelming for me works best in my space. It fits my lifestyle and is functional.

Interior design also plays a crucial role in enhancing the functionality of a space. A well-designed interior maximizes the use of available space, ensuring that every corner serves a purpose. Designers consider factors like traffic flow, natural light, and storage solutions to create layouts that are both efficient and comfortable. In small spaces, for instance, clever design tricks such as multifunctional furniture and strategic lighting can make a room feel larger and more open. Similarly, in larger spaces, thoughtful zoning and spatial organization prevent the area from feeling overwhelming or impersonal.
